R&D - In Progress - IPPM

New Earth observation, atmospheric sounding, planetary exploration and general scientific missions require the capability to store large amounts of data and to process them on board applying both first level trigger procedure and compression algorithms.
Moreover, short development times and the control of costs and risks together with requirements to improve performance of onboard intelligence and processing autonomy pose strong requirements. These requirements are usually not compatible with the traditional pattern to develop highly specialised and customised satellites, targeted for particular a mission.

The above mentioned points led to the definition of a new approach for payload data system development, which is based on common requirements for platform control and data handling in addition to accommodating for mission specific requirements. These concepts lead to the development of a flexible, programmable and modular data processing unit suitable for both payload and platform applications.
Aurelia in collaboration with CAEN Aerospace and Consorzio Pisa Ricerche (TEAM division) is involved in the development of the Integrated Payload Data Processing and Storage System (IPPM), able to operate as a compact stand alone computer suitable for a range of mission scenarios.
The IPPM will be produced as an Engineering Model (EM), but to facilitate for a quick EM to Flight Model migration, great emphasis has been put on selecting components that have a correspondent space qualified versions.
